Home - 5 Stages of a Surf Lesson
At Ticket To Ride Surf School, we provide the highest quality Surf Lessons based on the ISA “ABC” beginner Lesson structure. Many of our coaches have undergone the ISA Level one course with us on our Surf Adventures we run twice a year in South Africa & Sri Lanka.
If you’re on the fence about getting started with surfing or just wondering what a lesson involves, I’ve decided to answer (hopefully) all your questions.
Your surf instructor will start the lesson with an introduction to surfing, explaining the basics, surf safety, and surf etiquette. They’ll also give you a quick overview of the equipment you’ll be using, including the surfboard, leash, and fins.
Before heading into the water, your instructor will go over beach safety, including the locations of the Lifeguards, which flags to surf and swim between, and any main hazards that our beach (Watergate Bay) has. They will continue to teach you how to stay safe and protect yourself in any situation.
Once you’re familiar with the equipment and the beach safety, it’s time to practice. Your instructor will demonstrate the correct techniques for catching a wave, positioning on your board, paddling, popping up (getting to your feet), and the correct riding position when up and riding on a wave. They’ll also give you some tips on how to stay balanced on the board and how to maneuver the board on the water.
After practicing on the beach, it’s time to hit the water! Your instructor will guide you through the white water waves, helping you to catch your first waves and providing feedback on your technique. They’ll also help you to find the best waves to catch and give you tips on how to eventually read the waves and start to catch them yourself.
At the end of the lesson, your instructor will provide you with feedback on your progress and give you tips on how to continue improving your surfing. They’ll also answer any questions you may have and provide you with advice on what type of equipment to invest in if you decide to continue surfing.
